Porphyry - Veg Philosopher for the Animals
Being vegan for the animals is more important than ever! Few people know about the ancient philosphers who advocated for our fellow creature's rights.
One of the earliest philosophers who was an advocate for the animals was Pophyry. Back in the ancient Greek and Roman days, he was an advocate for 'vegetarianism' based on spiritual and ethical grounds. Back in ancient days, this was unheard of! This little known philosopher wrote a treatise called On Abstinence from Animal Food, advocating against the consumption of animals.
Coming from the era of Ancient Philosophy, Pophyry came from the school of Neoplatonism.
He lived in the Roman Empire.
Pophyry was a student of Plotinus. His strong stance on veganism and animal rights is demonstrated in this quote from his treatise On Abstinence from Animal Food:
"To deliver animals to be slaughtered and cooked, and thus be filled with murder, not for the sake of nutriment and satisfying the wants of nature, but making pleasure and gluttony the end of such conduct, is transcendently iniquitous and dire".
And this was written almost 2,000 years ago!
Be vegan for the animals!
